The Body of Christ

Use some Legos® to build a human shape. Talk about how each piece of Lego® might represent another person in the parish that is part of the Body of Christ. The Church with her members share talent, time and treasure to maintain the Body of Christ. How does that work? Discuss how various talents that parish members share can complete a whole, effective representation of Christ on earth.

Manna

Discuss as a family what it must have been like to have manna fall, and quail become available where there was no food to be found, evidence of God’s provision. Consider how God has helped your family and whether it was remembered or forgotten. Speculate as to why the Israelites forgot so soon and began to doubt God’s help.

THE LIVING BREAD

The Living Bread

[D size=”20″]

“I am the living bread which came down out of heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever” (6:51).

In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus calls himself “the bread of life” and tells the people that whoever eats his bread will live forever. Isn’t that interesting? As he often does, Jesus is using language to help make his point. He doesn’t mean that he’s really a loaf of bread, does he? But he’s making a comparison. Just like bread is something that helps our bodies to live and grow, Jesus is reminding us that the way to keep our spirits strong and alive (both now and forever – with God in heaven) is to follow his example. Jesus is food for our souls in the same way that real bread is food for our bodies.

CYCLISTS W/ ARMS RAISED

In God’s Care

“I am the living bread which came down out of heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever” (6:51).

Our Jewish friends eat bread called challah on the Sabbath and other holidays. It is a braided bread made with eggs and other ingredients such as flour, milk, yeast, and salt. Poppy seeds or sesame seeds are sprinkled on top. This bread symbolizes God’s care for the Israelites during the forty years they traveled in the desert.

We find this story in the Old Testament. At the time of Moses the Israelites were driven from Egypt and wandered in the wilderness. They became hungry and wondered how they would find enough food to survive. God said to Moses, “I am going to rain down bread from heaven for you, and each day the people shall go out and gather enough for that day.” (Exodus 16:4)

RUN DOWN BARN

Living Bread

“I am the living bread which came down out of heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever” (6:51).

Why do we eat? (Allow children to answer.) Yes, we eat because we are hungry. Being hungry makes our stomach growl. Sometimes, when we’re hungry, our hands shake and we feel weak. A hungry person might say, “I want food and I want it now!”

We can’t keep going very long without food. Food is to human beings like gasoline is for cars. A car can’t run without fuel and people can’t run very far without food.
