MINISTRY-TO-CHILDREN: This message is based on the gospel of John 14:15-21. It reminds us that Jesus promised the Spirit to comfort us and be with us. We might not see Him with our eyes, but we know that God is always with us, and that gives us joyful hope!

Catholic Activities

Easter 6A

Choose one of the following activities as a way to further reflect on the Sunday readings:

  • Take out any symbols or pictures of your Confirmation or the Confirmation of other members of the family. Talk about what you remember about the day. Discuss how the Holy Spirit was present that day and how you continue to experience the presence of the Holy Spirit in your life today.
  • Discuss with your family what actions manifest the presence of the Holy Spirit in the world today. Make a list of such actions. Talk with your family about making a conscious effort to manifest the Spirit to others throughout the week.
  • Pray together the Prayer of the Holy Spirit. Teach it to those members of the family who do not know it yet:
    • Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And you will renew the face of the earth. Amen.

Showing Your Love

“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.”

Raise your hand if you have a pet that you love. (Oh what a lucky group of pets! I have one that I love too!)

Now, if I came over to your house and watched you together, how could I tell that you love your pet? What kind of things do you do to show your love? (Solicit children’s answers: petting, feeding, grooming, bathing, walking, etc.)

Wow! You sure do love those pets. I can tell, because loving isn’t something you can just SAY you do. Loving is something you SHOW you do. It’s a way you act toward someone or something.

Working for You

“I will pray to the Father, and he will give you another Counselor,(Advocate) that he may be with you forever” (14:16).

Let’s talk about a word that may be new to you. The word is advocate. An advocate is someone who helps you––who does what is best for you––who wants you to win.

When your parents go to a concert, a school play, a church pageant, or a ball game, in which you are participating, they are supporting you and wanting you to have a good experience. Parents are excellent advocates for their children.

Your doctor is another person who works on your behalf. Your doctor wants you to feel well and be healthy.

Warmed by God’s Spirit

I will not leave you orphaned.”

Emperor penguins are the largest of all penguins. They grow to be three feet high (demonstrate) and can weigh one hundred pounds. That is a big bird!

They live in Antarctica where it is very cold; mostly snow and ice. The way that Emperor penguins take care of their babies is quite interesting.

The mother penguin lays only one egg. She holds the egg on the tops of her feet to keep it off the ice. (Demonstrate) Soon after the egg is hatched she carefully moves the precious egg to the top of the father’s feet so she is able to go into northern waters where there are fish for her to eat.

The father penguin cares for the egg while holding it on his feet. He tucks a loose flap of his skin over the egg to keep it warm so it will hatch. The father spends about two months sheltering the egg, making sure it does not get cold. During that time the father penguin does not eat at all! He may lose up to one-half of his body weight.
